Now is the Time for Laser Skin Resurfacing. Here are Tips for Excellent Results!

Cosmetic aging is influenced by more factors than we could list here. The common ones include genetics, sun exposure, and the frequent use of facial muscles to make expressions. The changes in superficial tissue are difficult to avoid altogether but not impossible to manage. One of the ways many people do this is to undergo laser skin resurfacing.

The concept of laser skin resurfacing has been refined over the years to include both deep and superficial treatments. Not all lasers obliterate the top layers of skin. Some, like fractional resurfacing, emit laser energy in pinpoints to achieve gentler, more subtle results without extensive downtime. Regardless of the type of laser treatment one chooses to revive their skin, one of the questions most patients ask is “how long will results last?”

In general, the results of laser skin resurfacing can last from 2 to 5 years. However, it is not impossible to extend the benefits of laser treatment with a few simple tricks. Some you may already be doing.

  • Develop a relationship with sunscreen. Multiple studies confirm that sunscreen is our best defense against sun damage. Broad-spectrum sunscreen filters the most dangerous UV rays. An SPF of 30 is sufficient for most skin types. The key is to be consistent throughout the year and to reapply often during the summer months.
  • Nourish the skin. Two prominent ways to nourish the skin are to eat well and stay hydrated. The skin thrives on vitamins and antioxidants that fight free radicals. Water consumption is also vital to plump, moist, resilient skin cells. Eight glasses a day is a good start, but don’t stop there if you work up a sweat or consume caffeine or alcohol, beverages that cause dehydration.
  • Supplement. Often, the foods that we eat lack the nutritional content the skin needs to stay strong and to regenerate well. Antioxidant and vitamin supplements can give us the boost we need.
  • Get organized with skincare. Washing your face is only the basic step of skincare. To support the skin fully, it is necessary to cleanse, moisturize, and exfoliate. Together, these tactics remove dirt and debris, provide the skin with a protective barrier, and support cellular turnover.
