Why get a Mommy Makeover? What can it do for me?
As the baby grows, so does the abdomen. This may result in a weakening and separation of the abdominal muscles and stretching of the abdominal skin. The stretching may cause a breakage of the skin collagen, also known as stretch marks. These unsightly marks are purple-red in color and are concentrated around the belly button and lower abdomen or on the breasts. These effects often become even more apparent after childbirth and nursing.
Many new moms do lose their excess weight – eventually. Unfortunately, the weight loss is not proportional to the amount of fatty tissue in a given area. That means for some, more weight may be lost from the breasts or buttocks than the abdomen and waist. The result: smaller breasts despite protrusion of the waist and abdomen from weakened abdominal muscles.
Once a woman finishes breastfeeding, the breasts deflate even further and begin to sag. The weak abdominal muscles and the excess abdominal fat appear as fullness and bulging of the belly. Many new moms may still look pregnant even as their child is taking his or her first steps.
A Mommy Makeover can help reverse these changes to the breasts and abdomen. For the breasts, Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, or a combined procedure is performed to correct sagging and restore lost volume. With the abdomen, a woman usually undergoes full tummy tuck surgery because having children can stretch out the abdominal wall, the musculature of the abdomen, and the skin around the tummy area.
See What Our Patients Have To Say!
You and your staff were very professional and did an excellent job of explaining everything entailing the procedure. I was very comfortable the entire process. Appointments were easy to get and kept timely. I was referred by a friend that had the same procedure done and I would be happy to refer other to Dr. Rosenthal. – N.T.
What are The Mommy Makeover Procedures?
Tummy Tuck
- Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) tightens the abdominal muscle and removes excess skin.
Tummy tuck surgery involves removing excess skin and fat from the abdomen through an incision made just above the pubic line. If you have had a previous cesarean section, the incision can be made over that scar to have it blend in. Before undergoing your surgery, Dr. Rosenthal will meet with you to discuss your health and what sort of results you would like to achieve. Tummy Tucks are not intended to help you lose weight but are for individuals of a healthy weight who have a small layer of fat or excess skin that proper diet and exercise cannot fix. To give you a good idea of what your results could be, browse through our online photo gallery to see some pictures of women before and after Abdominoplasty with a body shape similar to yours.
Liposuction
- Liposuction, combined with an Abdominoplasty, can enhance the overall result.
Liposuction involves small, inconspicuous incisions made in places where you wish to lose fat. The fat is slowly suctioned out of the body using a small surgical vacuum attached to a cannula. Like most plastic surgeries, Liposuction is ideal for people who are close to their ideal weight (within 30% of the healthy range) who wish to recontour areas of fatty deposits. This can help greatly after pregnancy since even through strict diet and exercise, many women cannot lose that small layer of extra fat gained around their abdomen, hips, or thighs. Combining Liposuction with an Abdominoplasty will not only make you slimmer but remove excess stretched skin and contour your curves into what they used to be before you had children. Before having your consultation, it helps to browse online photo galleries, including ours, of women’s before and after pictures. Looking at women with similar weights and body shapes as yours will give you an idea of what to expect after your surgeries.
Breast Procedures
- Breast Augmentation can restore volume lost during breastfeeding by using a saline or silicone implant.
- Breast Lift (Mastopexy) can be done in conjunction with a breast implant. Having both done together can restore volume while adding a nice lift to restore your breasts to what they looked like before breastfeeding and pregnancy. It can also help you achieve better breast symmetry, something that breastfeeding sometimes can distort because of all the stretching and engorgement involved.

What is the Recovery Process After Mommy Makeover Surgery?
Recovery from multiple procedures at once can last somewhat longer. Typically, recovery from Tummy Tuck, Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, and possibly Liposuction, will take approximately 6 weeks. Women respond very well to the results of Mommy Makeovers. Returning to their pre-pregnancy form, women feel better in and out of clothes and retain a more youthful appearance.
Mommy Makeover FAQs
Should I get Multiple Mommy Makeover Procedures at the Same Time?
Most commonly, women may want to undergo multiple procedures at one time because there is one recovery period, one leave from work, and one period of time away from children. Therefore, a single surgical appointment can manageably fit into their lives better than multiple times for the different procedures.
