Real Talk about Tummy Tuck Recovery

May 15, 2018/in Blog, Tummy Tuck /by Regina Rosenthal MD

Tummy Tuck San Jose CAThe idea of a tummy tuck may be exciting and frightening all at once. On one hand, you’ve got the opportunity to enjoy a flat, gorgeous stomach. On the other hand, surgery and recovery present an unknown variable the whole process – and we don’t like the unknown. A tummy tuck may feel like a bit of a journey. Nonetheless, we are here to support you along the way with information and instruction. In the end, our patients are happy they decided to have their body-contouring procedure.

Starting on the Right Foot

If you’re planning to have a tummy tuck, you can start your recovery on the right foot by making any necessary diet and exercise changes before surgery. A well-balance diet after surgery is essential to optimal healing. The body will need every bit of nutrition it can get. At the same time, the post-surgery diet needs to take into account risks like constipation and fluid retention.

Gassiness and bloating are side effects that you want to avoid as much as possible after tummy tuck surgery. A way to lower this risk is to cut out carbonated beverages and any other foods you identify as triggers for bloating. Sodium intake should also be reduced to prevent fluid retention. An easy to way cut down on sodium is to eat fresh, whole foods. Most processed foods are high in sodium.

Another vital aspect of tummy tuck recovery is rest. Interestingly enough, the amount of inactivity that occurs after this procedure comes as a surprise to many patients. For the first several weeks after abdominoplasty, very little physical activity can be tolerated. It is beneficial to create strategies to combat boredom (a precursor to post-surgery “blues”).

Managing the Bumps

Recovery from tummy tuck surgery is not a glamorous process, let’s just put that out there. Along the way, there may be a few awkward moments. Expecting a few can help you keep your spirits up as your body heals. Prepare to need help with most physical activities for at least a few days. Don’t even try to do things like shower or use the bathroom on your own. Prepare for constipation by taking a good laxative in conjunction with your pain medication. Prepare to look bloated and swollen for a time. A tummy tuck is a complex procedure and your body will swell in response to the modifications that have been made to the abdomen.

When you know what to expect from a procedure like tummy tuck surgery, there is much less stress surrounding the process. To learn more, schedule a consultation with Dr. Rosenthal in our office near San Jose.
