What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is the procedure that plastic surgeons perform to improve body contours through fat removal. You could call it spot-reduction at its finest. Dr. Rosenthal utilizes ultrasonic liposuction to first loosen and liquefy fat cells and then remove them through a small cannula. The movement of the cannula creates tiny tunnels through subcutaneous fat while removing cells. The surrounding fat then collapses into these tunnels, creating a smooth layer.

Liposuction Recovery

After liposuction, a compression garment is applied to the treatment area and the patient is moved to a monitored recovery area. They remain here until they are alert enough to release to a loved one. At home, prescription pain medication may be taken for a few days to support optimal comfort. The compression garment helps with this also. By the end of the first week, surgical side effects including swelling, bruising, and soreness have usually diminished significantly and patients can return to work. Restrictions on strenuous physical activity may remain until 4 to 6 weeks post-op.
