More Than Just Cosmetic: How Rhinoplasty Can Improve Breathing

October 31, 2023/in Rhinoplasty /by content.team

rhinoplastyWhen most people think of rhinoplasty, colloquially known as a “nose job,” they often associate it solely with cosmetic changes. That’s understandable, as many people seek it out for that reason.

However, rhinoplasty offers more than just an aesthetically pleasing nose. It can also be a life-changing procedure for those who struggle with breathing issues.

The functional benefits of rhinoplasty shouldn’t be overlooked, so keep reading to learn why it could be more than just a cosmetic option for you.

The Anatomy of Breathing

The nose is a critical part of our respiratory system, and its delicate structure, consisting of bone and cartilage beneath the skin, can impact our ability to breathe. Issues like a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, or valve collapse can obstruct the airflow, leading to difficulty breathing.

With rhinoplasty, Dr. Regina Rosenthal can correct these anatomical problems, elevating the skin from the bone and cartilage framework and making necessary modifications to improve your breathing.

Medical Indications for Rhinoplasty

Not everyone seeks rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons. The procedure can also be a medical recommendation for individuals suffering from chronic sinus infections, sleep apnea, or other conditions influenced by nasal obstruction. In some cases, tissue from other parts of the body, such as ear or rib cartilage, may be used as a graft to attain the ideal nasal structure, granting patients relief from the discomfort of breathing problems.

What to Expect During and After Surgery

Depending on your needs, Dr. Rosenthal may perform either an “open” or “closed” rhinoplasty. Post-surgery, you can expect some degree of discomfort, swelling, and bruising, which generally subsides within two weeks. Cold compresses and prescribed medications can alleviate these symptoms. Within a week to 10 days, most patients can return to non-strenuous activities, and by six weeks, many patients can resume all normal activities.

Schedule a Consultation Today

If you’re experiencing breathing difficulties, rhinoplasty could be more than just a cosmetic solution — it could be a necessary one.

To discuss whether rhinoplasty is the right option for you, schedule a consultation with Regina Rosenthal, MD. Call 408-559-4700 to learn more and take the first step toward a more functional and aesthetically pleasing nose.
