Liposuction: Looking Beyond the Belly
Stubborn fat can be an endlessly frustrating problem. Many adults deal with this and express a desire for something different. While there is yet to be a magic pill for targeting unwanted fat, there is an option to eliminate pockets of fat for good. Dr. Rosenthal, a leading plastic surgeon in the Silicon Valley, performs liposuction as one of our leading procedures. In a great number of cases, the target area for liposuction is the abdomen. Granted, this is a very common area in which fat can linger for years without just cause. But we don’t want to limit this procedure. Here, we take a look at liposuction using a broader lens. From that, you may see how this procedure is ideal for your concerns and aesthetic goals.
Liposuction is performed on a number of different parts of the body. These include:
- Thighs
- Flanks/Love handles
- Back
- Buttocks
- Backs of the arms
- Upper neck
- Calves
- Chest (for men)
Essentially, any area in which stubborn fat won’t budge may be treatable with liposuction. If you can pinch it, liposuction may remove it. The benefit of doing so is that the fat that is removed is gone forever. When a person loses weight, they don’t eliminate fat cells, they shrink them. Liposuction is the surgical procedure that carefully, methodically removes a portion of fat cells in an area. The technique leaves channels in the layer of fat that surrounding cells can fall into. This creates a smooth, consistent contour across the area. And, because the cells are removed, the area can remain sculpted for many years. The body has only so many fat cells and it does not replace those that are removed with liposuction. With that, patients can expect their liposuction results to sustain provided that they maintain a healthy lifestyle that keeps them at or near their ideal weight.
Know the Limitations
There are limitations to liposuction that patients should know. This procedure removes three to four liters of fat, which equates to six to eight pounds. That said, some patients show zero weight loss on the scale. This isn’t the point of liposuciton. The point is to look different and feel amazing. While patients can have multiple areas treated at one time, the limitation for the volume of fat removed in a single surgery remains. The reason for this limitation is that removing more than 3 to 4 liters based on the patient’s weight or BMI can increase the risk of complications. Performed within given safety guidelines, liposuction can achieve outstanding, lasting results.
